Is 48 GB RAM sufficient for 4k video editing and blender or should I spend the extra cash for 64?

Main Post:

I'm fine with getting 64 GB, but I would be happy if I could get 48 instead.

Top Comment: Go with 64GB just make sure it’s a 2x32 setup.

ramcash or meal plan?

Main Post:

my son, who lives off campus, would like to get meals on campus occasionally.

i can’t figure out the difference between getting a meal plan or ramcash.

do both work there? and what’s the difference?

the website is confusing and doesn’t explain what a meal costs with ramcash, which makes me wonder if i can be used in regular dining halls. and if so, why get a meal plan?

Top Comment: Ramcash is basically normal money that most places on campus accept and its easier and quicker to use than real money, but you can't turn it back into real money once you turn it into ramcash. Meal plans are worth $10 each, and they let you into dining halls and pay for food items at mini markets. You can use ramcash to go into a dining hall, but it's a hassle and really not worth it to do normally. Meal plans are given to you weekly, and reset each week, so it's a use it or lose it kind of system. If your son lives off-campus, I'd say go for a lighter meal plan if he plans on eating on campus regularly, otherwise opt for ramcash if it's going to be a rare occurrence. I believe all 3 meal plans also give you $200 in ramcash every semester.

Is it normal to have over half of my RAM cached? If not, how do I fix it?

Top Comment: Unused memory is wasted memory, Windows will use free memory to cache things for performance reasons.

Ram cache iii what to do with it ?

Main Post:

So I see it has a ram allocation but I don't know what it's for or what is safe number to put it on, I have 256gb of ram at 3600mhz

Top Comment: delete it. its not useful for anything unless you frequently access very large files in a professional workload or inflaiting benchmark numbers. all it does is store commonly accessed files in ram. windows already does what ram cache iii does automatically. ram cache iii is just more aggresive. you will not notice any real world benefit and it will just eat up more ram

Finally getting more ram! How different will switching from 8gb to 32gb feel and is it safe?

Main Post:

I've been battling with 8 gigs forever, and finally decided it's time to cough up the extra cash. I just want to know anything before i make any terrible mistakes with my computer.

Edit- When I say safe. I mean it for the pc not me, I don't know that much about computers and just don't want to ruin it because I don't have the money to fix it.

Top Comment: Your PC going to feel like it got oiled. Like going from HDD to SSD.

16GB RAM --> 32GB RAM worth the money?

Main Post:

Hi everybody!

I'm on a quest to find a good new laptop for my study next year. It's a music study and I use my laptop for music production (and a little bit of video and photo editting).

So now I've come to the conclusion that I need at least 16GB of RAM (I'm using 8GB RAM in my current laptop and he's having a haaard time). But some people also advice me to go for 32GB RAM. I'm looking for a new macbook pro (I don't want to start an apple vs windows battle. I've used both and from personal experience I like MacOS more ;)). So if I would make the switch to 32GB I would have to step up to the 14'' macbook pro which will cost me at least 743 euros more.

With all the aditional improvements from the 13'' to the 14'' (including the upgrade to 32GB RAM), is it worth this step? I want a laptop that will last me for a long time, and one which won't limit me in any way.

I hope some of you can advice me :)

Top Comment: Yes! .... Well it depends. If you make music with a lot of plugins and effects then you should totally go for it given that you say you also do video and photo editing (which are also resource heavy applications). I have a 2020 16 GB MacBook air and I hardly use up half of the ram.

Any benefit to using "RamCache III"

Main Post:

With my motherboard software Suite (ASUS) came this program. It's really intended for gaming so games can load faster. I couldn't figure out why my SSD benchmarks were reading so high, then I remembered this program. You can see what it does on a synthetic benchmark. Is there any benefit to using it in the real world day-to-day; and can it harm anything? I have read that it can cause data corruption because the OS will think that something is written to the disk when in actuality it is only cached. Here are images of the benchmarks.

Top Comment: So, as the name would imply this is just a cache in RAM that this program tries to put frequently/recently accessed files in. However, I can't imagine this would make a meaningful difference in game load times if you're already loading off an SSD. Yes, RAM technically runs MUCH faster than an SSD, but the extra speed is wasted. Even if you had the entire game loaded into RAM (like with a RamDisk), the game is only going to run as fast as the game can. Modern games with modern SSDs aren't even maxing out the read speeds of the drives. Maybe that'll change with DirectStorage, but that's still in the future. I wouldn't carve out some of my RAM to be used as a glorified hybrid drive cache lol. Maybe if I had like 64+GB.

I deleted ASUS ramcache iii and now my windows doesn’t respond

Main Post:

I was deleting software that I didn’t need and ended up deleted ramcache, this restarted my computer but now whenever I try to open anything it crashes windows. My keyboard also isn’t connecting now for some reason. Any suggestions on what this could be?

Difference Between Low L3 Cache and High L3 Cache in Gaming?

Main Post:

I currently have CPU with 4 MB L3 cache, I am planning on buying a CPU with 32 MB L3 cache, what differences am I going to see? Better framerate? Less stuttering? Others?

Top Comment: Depends on the CPU, but generally a bigger L3 cache leads to higher performance, for example an 5700X with 32MB of L3 is usually a bit faster than a 5700G with 16MB, even when they are clocked the same. This is especially true in a large number of games, where the X3D variants with their significantly larger L3 caches reign supreme.
